Working with couples
Robin Trewartha has worked with couples for many years; starting, believe it or not, in his first career as a probation officer. In the 1960′s, probation officers undertook voluntary couselling of couples who needed help; some were ‘sent’ by their families. This does not happen today!!
The focus of this work is not on each individual. It is on the ‘whole couple’. This therapy is termed ‘systems therapy’ by some professionals. Most of principles of therapy that apply to individual work described on this web site are adapted to working with a couple. For instance, cognitive behavioural and strategic therapies use tasks. Getting better as a couple does mean, most often, that some practical work has to be done at home and between sessions. Additional services may apply, such as recording sessions. It often helps to hear and see the small details in our behaviour that can have a big impact on our partner.
Coming into couples work can include a free initial consultation. Both parties would be expected to attend. Enquiries about these consultations can be made to mobile 07785-117179.
It is worth bearing in mind that couples work is best undertaken with an independent therapist; not with a counsellor already known to one party or the other.
